The Stokke® Nomi™ is a highly adjustable seating solution designed to support children from newborn all the way to adulthood. The design is inspired by the discontinued Sitti® chair, which was designed by Peter Opsvik - the same designer behind the iconic Tripp Trapp® chair. While the Tripp Trapp® was designed for Peter's son, the Sitti® was now designed for his granddaughter.
The original Sitti® chair featured design choices similar to the Tripp Trapp®, as it was made nearly entirely of wooden components. This initial design was actively sold between 1993-2009, until it left the Stokke® portfolio. Between 2013-2022, a Danish company by the name of Evomove had improved, modernized and perfected the design, which created the Nomi™ chair. This updated chair was actively sold during these years, until Stokke® reacquired the product to have the Stokke® Nomi™ added its portfolio again at the end of 2022 (2023 in the US & Canada markets), after a long hiatus, as a sibling for the iconic Tripp Trapp®. The Stokke® Nomi™ focuses on ergonomics, freedom of movement and comfort - the name Nomi also stems from the word ergonomics.
The Stokke® Nomi™ is made up of a central wooden stem, made of either Beech, Oak or Walnut wood, along with a plastic backrest, seat plate, foot plate and feet, along with plastic handles and washers to secure the two plates. The seat and foot plate can both be adjusted along the wooden Stem of the chair, to allow for easy tool-free adjustment as the child grows. The plates include long flat bolts which go through the wooden Stem to enable this, and are caught on the other side with the washer and handle. The handle includes a metal nut insert which catches these bolts. In order for proper long term usage, users should be careful to always tighten the handles only when the flat bolt is aligned properly with the nut. If the flat bolt is crooked and not aligned with the nut and too much pressure is applied during the tightening process, this misalignment and pressure could wear out the teeth of the flat bolt, making further usage difficult, or even impossible. The wooden stem also increases in thickness the lower it goes, to ensure that if the seat or foot plate handle is not fully tightened and pressure is applied on either of the plates, the plate may fall slightly lower, but it will also self-tighten itself in the process.
The wooden stem incorportates a metallic safety pin which must be pushed in twice during assembly of the backrest - it must be pushed in so the backrest can go over the wooden stem, making it pop out at the screw hole, after which it must be popped in again so the backrest can be slid over the wooden stem completely, revealing the screw holes and allowing for full assembly. The safety pin ensures that if the user gets distracted during assembly and does not finish it completely, the backrest would still be secure enough, even if assembly has not been fully completed. The seat plate has two black rubber stoppers underneath, which allow placing the entire chair to rest on a table, which is useful in case the floor needs to be vacuumed or mopped. The foot plate includes space for storing 2 Allen keys, so in case the chair ever needs to be disassembled, the 2 Allen keys required for this process would always remain readily available. The two plastic feet include gliders in the front and wheels in the back. The wheels are there to act as a safety mechanism, so in case the chair were to be pushed backwards by the child, the chair would then roll backwards - even if it's on a surface with higher friction. The version sold in the US and Canada also includes Extended Gliders in the back for added security.
To use the Stokke® Nomi™ with a newborn up until 6 months, the Newborn Set accessory would ne needed. When using the Newborn Set, instead of assembling the seat plate, foot plate and backrest of the Nomi, just the Newborn Set accessory is needed in the position of the backrest. The Newborn Set also connects to the wooden stem at the location of where the seat plate would usually go, as this then allows the user to set the angle of the Newborn Set, which can then also easily be adjusted by sliding it back and forth before tightening the handle underneath. The Newborn Set textiles are double-sided, meaning that both textile sides can be used. This allows the user to choose between the two different colours and switch things up if desired. Once the textile is fitted, the harness can also be fitted to the base of the Newborn Set and once the child is strapped in with the 5-point harness, it would be ready for use.
The Nomi™ Play is an optional accessory for the Newborn Set, which can be attached to the metal frame underneath the Newborn Set. It enables a long flexible plastic bow, covered with soft textile, to reach over the Newborn Set and hang up to three small toys for the child to interact with.
The Baby Set can be used with children up to 36 months (or up to 24 months in the US and Canada) and slides into the seat plate at the bottom and clips into the backrest at the top on both sides. It is also encouraged to use the 5-point Harness along with the Baby Set, which is an optional but recommended accessory in most markets, while in the US and Canada, you are only meant to use the Baby Set with the Harness and receive both parts when purchasing the Baby Set. The Harness crotch strap attaches from underneath the seat plate at the same location as the Baby Set - this means that when using both the Harness and Baby Set as recommended, the Harness will be tucked away safely between the seat plate and the Baby Set.
The Tray is an optional accessory that can be used along with the Baby Set, which allows the child to have a dining experience brought to them. The Tray cannot be used without the Baby Set, as it directly interacts with the Baby Set in order to remain attached. The Tray lines up with the upper edge of the Baby Set and then latches on with clips from both sides. If the Tray looks like it's tilted, it may be best to adjust the seat plate by briefly loosening it, pushing it further forward, and then retightening the seat plate. There is a limited length that the seat plate can be used with the Baby Set, as the seat plate must be close enough to the backrest in order for the Baby Set to be used.
The Cushion is an optional accessory, consisting of a set of two double-sided textile cushions which can be attached to the seat plate and the backrest, either with or without the Baby Set accessory attached. The double-sided feature allows the user to choose which color to use, similarly to the Newborn Set.
