When transitioning to the 6+ configuration of the YOYO, the canopy joints that are meant for the canopy wires are turned downwards in their default factory setting to prevent dust and other particles falling inside. When it is time to assemble the canopy along with the canopy wires, the first turns can be quite challenging and may even seem impossible due to fear of breaking these parts. However, there is a trick to this, which requires adjustment of one joint at a time until both are prepared using the following method:
- Insert one of the plain canopy wires (without textiles) into the joint
- Place your thumb against the cylindrical canopy joint which is sticking out
- While holding your thumb against the joint, using the same hand, wrap the tips of your fingers around the canopy wire - positioned just a few centimeters lower than the entry point of the wire
- While your hand is in position, you now have the required leverage to pull the wire backwards, towards the handle.
- This step may cause some concern because the first time this is done and it may feel unnatural, as it requires a larger amount of force than what may be expected. However, the reason why the joint is so stiff is because the grease within the joint has not been spread around enough until this movement is performed.
- Using the steps above, it will be possible to make a 180-degree rotation and finish assembling the canopy. However, it is recommended to first loosen the joints further prior to assembly of the canopy. To do this, use the same grip method to make a few 360-degree turns on the entire joint - this will allow the grease to fully spread within the joint itself and will make future usage much smoother, especially when it comes to folding the handlebar whenever it needs to be folded.
The YOYO³ in particular has a canopy joint which is much stiffer than previous iterations due to a design change that makes it more resilient in windy weather, though such guidelines for loosening the canopy joint also apply for older versions.
