The Tripp Trapp® comes with 4 black plastic gliders underneath the legs. Older chairs prior to June 2013 had plastic gliders underneath which were beige or white.
These plastic gliders are there for a few reasons:
- To protect the chair
- To protect your floor
- To ensure that the chair can glide when the chair is pushed
It is important that users do not add any additional soft felt pieces on these gliders, as the gliders must be able to glide. Attaching anything to increase friction can create a tipping risk when the chair is pushed. The chair is best used on a smooth floor which can allow for gliding.
In addition to the regular gliders which come with each chair by default, there are also the optional Extended Gliders which can be attached to the rear end of the legs and customers receive these when they purchase one of two specific accessories for the Tripp Trapp®:
- Newborn Set (0-6 months)
- Baby Set (6-36 months)
It is also possible to purchase Extended Gliders separately, but users typically receive them when buying one of the above. Please note that the Extended Gliders do not come with the purchase of a chair. The Extended Gliders are an additional safety feature which are recommended to be used when the chair is used with a child up until 3 years of age, which is the reason these Extended Gliders only come with accessories that are required for a smaller child. When used with an older child that no longer requires the above accessories to use the chair, the Extended Gliders become optional.
The Extended Gliders also allow for the chair to glide, when pushed, but offer an additional length to further prevent the chair from potentially tipping. This could happen if the child is positioned next to a table or another solid surface where they would be able to propel their legs against it, pushing the chair backwards. When used on a smooth floor, the chair will easily glide backwards. When used on a floor with more friction such as a carpeted floor, or when felt pads are used, the risk of tipping instead of gliding increases, where the extra length of Extended Gliders could prevent the chair tipping with the child inside.
To further prevent any tipping risks, make sure that the chair has been set up according to what is shown in the User Guide. The front of the foot plate should never reach further than the front of the chair's legs.
Please also remember that the child should never be left unattended, even if they are safely strapped in.
US & Canada only:
Until November 2021, purchases of the Newborn Set within the US and Canada also came with a set of Front Extended Gliders. These were required at the time due to older regulatory standards. These are no longer required for safe usage of the chair - it is sufficient to use the regular Extended Gliders that attach to just the rear of the chair, while ensuring that the User Guide is followed.
